The river was canalised between Bishops Stortford and its mouth in the eighteenth century to facilitate the malt trade between Bishop Stortford and London and along its course runs through a mixture of agricultural land, light industrial estates, flood meadows and residential areas. These photographs were shot over a period of 2 years as apart of a PhD research project. The aim of the research was look at the ways traces of the emotional experience of place can be embedded within a photographic print. The outcome of the project was a set of images printed as cyanotypes then toned using plant material collected from the river banks. Nothing highlights our separation from nature than our need to depict landscapes in art and even the language of photography where we shoot pictures, capture images or take photographs emphasises this division between photographer, place and viewer. The research tried to bridge this gap by emphasising the emotional relationship with a place rather than simply documenting the river. By incorporating plant material into the final prints I hoped to bridge the gap between myself, the river and the viewer and leave a trace of what it felt to be by the river. The images displayed here are not the toned prints.
