This is a gallery of landscape photography from an area I have known and loved for a very long time. Most of the images on this gallery were taken with my Hasselblad 503CX using either Tmax 100 or PanF film. The rest were taken with my Sony DSC T7.
The Ridgeway is an ancient Neolithic road that runs from Buckinghamshire to Wiltshire along the length of the Chilterns and ends in the magnificant stone circle at Avebury far more beautiful and less well known than Stonehenge with it's tourist centre and dual carriageway.
As well as having some spectacular views there are numberous neolithic monuments along the length of the ridgeway, some of which have appear here.
Avebury
Avebury stands at the spot where the Ridgeway ended and was obviously a place of some importance in Neolithic times. The Wiltshire villages is surrounded by the largest stone circle in Europe (although many of the stones are now missing) and equally impressive is the avenue of stones marking the end of the old road.
Uffington Castle & the White Horse
Uffington Castle is an iron age hill fort next to the famous and mysterious white horse drawn into the chalk rocks. The White Horse of Uffington is best viewed from the air - I just about managed to photograph the head from the ground!
Wayland's Smithy
Actually a communal neolithic burial site, Wayland's Smithy takes it's name from the Anglo Saxon god of fire. The Anglo Saxons beleived that the site was actually the god's forge - hence the name - and would leave a coin as an offering when passing by. The trees surrounding the site certainly give it a ghostly air!
